Transition Leicester Homepage Critique

Hey all,

This isn't a Christian website I'm designing but it is for something I believe in.

Background:
Transition Leicester is environmental organisation aiming to locally tackle the twin challenges of peak oil and climate change. It is part of the greater Transition Network. You can find out more both here at our old website: http://www.transitiontowns.org/Leicester/Leicester and at the Transition Network website: http://www.transitionnetwork.org/

So I have done the homepage mockup in Inkscape and I'm looking for critique as I am more programmer than designer. http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/2209/homepage2o...

Thanks in advance, God bless,

A couple thoughts

I, too, am more of a programmer than a designer. However, I do have a couple of comments about the design, which I generally like.

  • If your "Main Navigation" menu is truly the main navigation, then it needs to be above the fold. The menu items in the heading duplicate most of the main navigation block so I'd just add a couple more items in the heading and eliminate the navigation block toward the bottom.
  • While your two columns' widths match the header division between image and text, they're not close enough to the same width to be considered equal, and too close to each other's width to be seen as distinct. The result, which seems to work with the image/text combination, looks "careless" or accidental to me. Put another way, if they should be taken as the same then they should be the same, if the design is to have them different then they should be obviously/boldly different.

Just my 2¢ worth,
Curt
