A little odd. I haven't been with a host yet that limits the amount of CNAME records. Who are you hosting with?

yeah. same here. Most hosts let you do quite a bit with DNS these days. Years ago, DNS was very limited. Sounds like your host hasn't kept up.

You could host your DNS external of your web host. For example, GoDaddy provides DNS services for free if you host your domain with them. You could setup all the CNAMEs you want. The only downside is that your site could go offline if your host ever changes records on their end. Web hosts expect your to point your name servers to their servers so they can make changs and update your services. If you use an external DNS provider, you have to keep up with and maintain the IP addresses for all the services you have with your hosting provider.

I have done this and it works pretty well in certain cases. One advantage is that godaddy has more robust DNS services than most web hosts. Many web hosts use their web server ad the name server and do not have redundancy. This means that if your web server goes down, so do DNS services.

CrystalTech is our host. They outsource their DNS stuff to Melbourne IT.

Overall we've been very happy with CrystalTech--though it looks like it might be time to move our domain elsewhere.

I use the good ol' standby for my DNS: ZoneEdit.com. Free for up to five domains no matter who they're registered with.
