How can an outdated plugin, module, etc. be updated?

To answer my own question, it probable depends on the plugin, module, etc. license.

How can an outdated plugin, module, etc. be updated if you do not have the skill to do it? Where should someone go to get something updated?

Thanks!!!!!! Tim

While I've had zero

While I've had zero interaction with Drupal or Joomla (ok, I used Joomla once, but only as a contributing author to a blog), I can answer the question at least regarding Wordpress plugins with the assumption that Drupal and Joomla handle their plugins (or modules...or whatever they're called) in a similar way.

I guess the first line of attack would be to contact the original developer. From my experience, people who have developed a free plugin are generally gracious enough to respond to requests for updates. I've seen tons of guys come back to a project because enough people wanted a newer version.

If that isn't happening, you could, of course, do it yourself. When you download a plugin, you get all of the source code, so you could do whatever you wanted with it. I'm pretty sure that all Wordpress plugins are assumed to be open source, but now that I said that I'm wondering how the legality works.

If you aren't able to do it yourself, you could always ask someone in a place like this forum to help you.

So basically, it's not very often that you're hopeless.
