There's a part of me that would say (with tongue in cheek) "If I adopted out a daughter, I could afford to keep both workers...."
In your example, I'd also pick the hard worker.
BUT... on the implied provision that the harder worker was also more efficient and profitable for your company. If the person that didn't work very hard was that way simply because they could get all their work done faster, and the harder worker was just inefficient, then the tables would be turned...
I've worked a very large companies where it was quite common to see efficient workers get everything completed and off their desk before they went home at 5:30, whilst the inefficient workers had to stay, work overtime, and therefore got paid *extra* because they just weren't as good....

Pete.
The non-believer for two reasons:
1)A friend's boss said he used to try to hire only Christians, but then realized that his job was his mission field and now he tries to hire non-believers in order to witness to them.
2)As a witness, we need to show non-believers(and believers) that we stand by and hold each other accountable to our principles - like an honest work ethic.
(and ditto to Peter's comments about efficiency)
Is the 'hard worker' getting more done and acting ethically? Have you counseled the Christian worker about their work habits? Once a worker is released, how will their work be divided?
Let's reverse the roles and instead of an employee, let's talk about vendors - if you had 2 vendors to choose from for a product you needed in your business, one was at a better price from a company that was not Christian and the other was available from a Christian supplier, but at a higher price, which would get your business?
There was a discussion a while back about GoDaddy hosting, how it portrayed women in its advertising and the influence that had on your decision to select them for registering your domain or hosting your site. How different is this?
Just some other perspectives.
Peace!
My ten year old daughter ask me a question yesterday? If I had a business with two employees and had to let one go. One a Christian that did not work very hard and a non believer that did work very hard. Which one would I let go or fired of the two?
I told her that was a very good question that she was asking me. I said, we serve a good and just God right? She said, yes we do. Then the one that work hardest and serve me better will stay. The non believer would be my choose of the two.
Who would you pick to stay as your employee?
