Sharing an IP address with potentially many other websites is common practice with shared hosting accounts. You are sharing a lot of resources, e.g., processors, storage, disk drives, server instances, etc.
AFAIK there's only one problem with shared IP addresses. If you site needs to run HTTPS, then you will need a non-shared, aka dedicated, IP address that can be associated with your domain name for your security certificate.
I am currently recommending to my business customers that they purchase a "Business Class Hosting" account from Midphase because along with the typical facilities commonly provided by shared Linux plans, they offer a dedicated IP address and a security certificate (and a couple other goodies) for only $2/month more than a plan without these features. It's worth, IMO, $2/month for the IP address alone and it makes exploiting the certificate easier, if necessary, than moving to a different hosting account to get this feature in the future.
There are links to Midphase from my website's affiliates page 8=) . (They pay a nice commission, but I wouldn't recommend them if I didn't believe that they provide good service and value. I also have an account with them that I use for various purposes.)
Hope this helps,
Curt
After a lot of research and foot-dragging, I just moved one my sites over to Media Temple (gs service) and things seem to be working fine. I also just discovered how many other sites share the same IP address. Even more appalling, my other sites are still with a different hosting company where they share the same ip with a huge number of sites.
Must I move to a dv server to get a dedicated ip? Should I even concern myself with this?
Thanks in advance. Looking forward to the new projects g&g have planned.
Jim
