Time to say goodbye to my Powerbook G4???

Hello everyone,

My Powerbook G4 Titanium is now 6 years old!!! (Yes, it's ok to laugh) I never dreamed it would last this long. I bought the 5 year "if anything goes wrong plan" from Fry's... Well, nothing ever went wrong! I had friends tell me to break something so I could get a newer Mac. But I didn't have the heart to do that to Henrietta! Yes, my Powerbook has a name. It was the ONLY time I ever bought something without doing thorough research first. I bought it without thinking! And I have to say, she's been very good to me over the years.

I've got a 60gb HD, 512 of ram, and a combo drive that can burn only DVD-Rs at the whopping speed of 1x. Ha ha.

One of my cooling fans is making funny noises...On it's way out, I guess

I noticed a $500 laptop at Best Buy that was 4 times as powerful! ha ha. But the thing is I LOVE Macs!!!!! Nothing wrong with other stuff. I would love to have a dual-core, 4 gig-"who's your daddy machine", but I think I'd go into severe withdraw if it wasn't a Mac.. I could update the memory to 1 gig, add a faster super-drive, AND replace the two cooling fans..... Of course, it would still be limited in power compared to the hardware of today.

Honestly, I haven't really noticed my laptop being that slow. It still runs faster than all my friends' more powerful laptops. Of course, they won't think of getting rid of all the bloatware on their machines! But I have realized that If I'm going to be helping ministries with their "web and tech issues", then I need to have an up to date laptop! I've starting getting serious with using GIMP and Blender. And I'm starting to notice slowdowns and hanging programs.

I know there is no comparison between a little 10" ASUS eeepc and a Mac. But those little things look so cool. Maybe I should get one to be a "spare tire" for when Henrietta goes to silicon heaven.

So I guess I'll wind up with a new Mac, or a hot-rod laptop with some kind of linux..

Thanks for your thoughts, advice, and input,
Shane

Powerbook Homecoming Week

This is halarious to me. Why?

Last week, I got my Powerbook G4 Titanium back after loaning it to church for about a year or so. My wife's (newer) iBook croaked, so I needed a machine I could fix up for her. Yeah, it's banged up, needs some work, but it still rocks it like a champ. Even though I've had much newer machines over the years, that model is still my favorite Mac I've ever owned. So, it was good to get it back in house.

Then yesterday, out of the blue, my church contacts me and says: "We have this other old Powerbook G4 Titanium here. It's a beat up enough that we can't sell it...it's too expensive to fix....do you want it?" Of course, I was like "Heck Yeah!" (for parts if nothing else)

So, I am now currently staring at 2 Powerbook G4 machines (1ghz each) and am wondering if I should put them together into a single repaired machine (probably will). I just find it funny that this is at the front of my mind, then you posted this homage to your old machine as well. It's like "Powerbook Homecoming Week".

All that being said, my recommendation is: Unless you're doing video editing or hardcore photoshop, get a Macbook. The Pro isn't worth it unless you need massive horsepower or another feature (like the FW 800 port). The power in these machines is high enough now where only super power users should be buying the pros. My mom just got a Macbook and it's awesome...it might be my next purchase to replace my Pro when I'm ready....

Happy Mac Hunting!

RIP Henrietta

The passing of Henrietta will be difficult. I didn't know her personally but I know what powered her. A moment of silence for Henrietta...........

Ok then. Yep I think a macbook is well enough for most people.
