You are right. Drupal is discussed heavily on this site. Bob and Matt are Drupal guys. That's what they do. Not to put words in their mouth but I think if they were more knowledgeable in Joomla it would be discussed more on their podcast. As it stands now I think you will have to look elsewhere for a podcast that goes in depth on Joomla.
It would be awesome to have someone do podcast that covers Joomla in ministries. If you know of one post the links over in the Joomla section of the forums.
I was thinking more that since there are bound to be some Joomla Techies about on the Forum here, they might consider asking one or more of them to do some similar podcasts or just talk with them about differences between the platforms etc i.e. widen up the playing field somewhat. I know all too well how tough it is to look sideways when you get locked into your own speciality, but so much more comes from hearing what's done on the other platforms in a similar manner, and that's what I'd love to hear them be willing to explore more. It would no doubt bring in yet more Christian webmasters from those other platforms too, and expand the technical base of knowledge throughout the site. But I appreciate it's their site and their show, so concede their right to not go down that route :). Just a thought. Blessings, Romayne
I'm not a Joomla guy, so this wouldn't be me...
But if there is someone out there who could do a "segment" or ministry quick-tips type thing on Joomla and ministries, it would be cool to maybe post the feed in the joomla forum, and maybe Matt and Bob could include it every once in a while in the podcast if it were high quality.
Blessings,
Tony
Yeah, I'm all about this. If we could identify a Joomla! person here who had a bunch of knowledge about building ministry site's with Joomla! (and was articulate enough for a spoken podcast) I think we'd readily ask them to contribute audio segments for the podcast. We just haven't had anyone step up to do that.
The reality is, Drupal is both my and Matt's day jobs. We frankly just have never had the time to really learn the ins and outs of Joomla! (I know both of us would LOVE to do this, though).
So, consider this an open invitation. If anyone out there is a Joomla! pro and wants to record regular (high quality) segments for use on the podcast, we'd love to have you. Just let us know!
I guess I'll say it... we've asked for it before... are there any experts in Joomla! or any other system who could contribute. We would love to provide more other good stuff but we are web devs and focus on drupal development. I can talk about a lot of other stuff but it's really geekie and would be over the heads of most people.
Any suggestions on how we address this?
Might be worth maybe putting the offer out on the podcast given not every maybe visits the site regularly but maybe do listen to the pods more often?? Truly appreciate you both thinking about it tho, and hope someone out there knows a ton more than I do about it to talk about it - I can talk (Way can I talk LOL!) but just am totally inexperienced in Joomla to discuss anything about it other than to say I love it as a platform and would highly recommend it to anyone coming to CMS/PHP for the first time. I started off using CMSMS which was great as a very first one to go with as it gave me enough to get me in the door, but 6 months later when I discovered Joomla (hated the name, so had held off investigating it), I fell in love with the overall presentation of the Admin (very into colours you see!), so the next site I had to produce got put on it, and I've now got all my sites transferred over. In between I'd had a look at one of the sites that provides you with the opportunity to test drive ALL of the platforms but couldn't find any I liked to the same extent as Joomla, so have stuck with it.
Still appreciate the more generic info you guys discuss on the pods tho, like security etc, which is relevant regardless of whichever platform you use, so hugely useful. Thanks again for the time you put into it.
Hi guys - sorry to enter this conversation so late (I get here much less often than I'd like to :-)
I can fully understand and agree with everything that's been said so far. This forum / podcast is naturally Drupal oriented, but it *would* be good for other communities such as Joomla, Wordpress etc. to be represented, just because it would increase the value for everyone.
Matt asked how they might open up this site to more Joomla folks (for example) recently, and I was stuck for ideas at that moment.
I think to start with, an infrequent section of the podcast devoted to Joomla, presented by 'one of us Joomlatoids' (or whatever we're called), would give others working with that system a huge boost (and a good basis for comments/discussions, if there could be an appropriate Joomla thread created and linked from the podcast page).
I think I could commit to once a month to begin with, for example, just to give a short update or tip section on Joomla. I certainly don't pretend to be a great expert, but between my wife and I (she's the real Joomla admin expert, I'm more the tech/dev), I think we can provide some tips and valuable info about Joomla. However, we're both crazily busy right now, so I won't be able to start 'tomorrow'...! :-)
Anyone else prepared to have a go too - for Joomla, Wordpress or whatever else...?
Romayne - don't think you're "not experienced enough" to be able to help out (that is, if you want to!). I think that pseudo-beginners have a lot to share too, based on their experience with the motivation for choosing the system, first steps, first mistakes and how they were rectified, etc. This stuff is extremely valuable, for first time users, but can escape the attention of more 'experienced' presenters. Your enthusiasm is a big bonus! And I'm sure you will end up learning a lot more about Joomla through something like this... :-)
Alan
Hi Alan - you've encouraged me a ton in firstly being glad I raised the point here as maybe it's kickstarted something that might have taken longer to get off the ground. But also, you're right - I enjoy writing, not that I do it that well at times as my blog rants sometimes show, but I'd be more than happy to contribute some pieces on my own experiences with the platform too, and what little knowledge I do have on how to get started might indeed be of some value to some others coming behind, as we've all had to start somewhere, and not all webmasters are techies etc. I'm totally self-taught since I started producing sites in 1997, but I'm thriving on learning so much new material with Joomla in particular. I used to have a total phobia about PHP and anything to do with it because it scared me totally, yet now, I'm happily diving into PHP scripts and playing about with them (with help of course), and much more comfortable with databases and the even scarier MyPHP Admin etc. So yes, since I started this ball rolling in a sense, I'll make some effort to get into producing something - all I'll need then is to know who to fire it to when the time comes. :)
Blessings, Romayne
Hello Gentlemen,
I have quite a bit of experience with Joomla. I would be willing to help out with a Joomla podcast. I use it almost exclusively, with the exception of a few e107 and Drupal sites I maintain. I am a senior pastor of a church, a president of a Christian gaming clan, and president of my own computer company called "Wichita PC D.R."
I know what a high quality and cutting edge Joomla Web 2.0 site should have for ministry purposes, gaming purposes, business purposes, and e-commerce purposes. Since I am in the speaking industry, I am quite familiar with producing audio messages. I would love to join forces to produce something.
Have a look see at some of my personal Joomla websites:

www.corclan.com
www.ccmcpherson.com
www.calvarychapelwichita.com
Just let me know if you are interested.
God Bless,
Pastor Dade Ronan
I'm only new to the G&G site so forgive me if I'm suggesting this errantly for any reason, but I notice there's a heavy bias towards Drupal - presumably the platform of choice of the site owners, which is fine, but given the site caters to obviously those who use multiple CMS sites, and while I appreciate you can't cater to everyone, is there any way you could provide some more podcasts for those running one of the other equally popular platforms such as Joomla or Mambo etc. I know there's provision here on the Forum for us, which I've already appreciated heavily, but would just love to be able to listen to more topics on podcast geared towards how to use Joomla to the max for a church site etc. However, I am absolutely thrilled to be able to listen to these shows which combine my 2 greatest loves - my faith and my computer/website use, so truly thank you guys for taking the time to put them together. Blessings, Romayne
