Joomla 1.5.9

Hello everyone,

Out of curiosity, I downloaded and installed Joomla 1.5.9. Joomla is new to me, so I know nothing of the history.

I like it. I don't really know how to add content or do anything yet, but it's interesting. I was impressed with how easy I was able to add languages! I like it how you can choose a language when logging in as admin. And I was impressed with how complete all the administrative functions were translated.

And that's my positive Joomla post for the day.

I started messing around with

I started messing around with Joomla before I heard of Drupal. It was pretty easy. A lot of stuff worked right out of the box. If you want a CMS site up that looks good and don't want to learn how to theme Joomla is a good choice. You can buy some fantastic themes over at http://www.joomlashack.com/. I have also found the forums over a joomla more responsive to help out than the drupal forums. I think Drupal forums have more hard core geeks in there. If your a newb you can feel really dumb in there.
Thats my personally opinion of course.
I made the commitment to stick with drupal for the long run. I tried learning both but I started mixing up terms with each other and getting really lost.

Regardless which one you use, they are both excellent. I would love to see some more Joomla people over here at the G&G forums.

Impressed with Joomla

Hello everyone,

techmate: Thanks for the input.

I seriously was SHOCKED how easy the languages for the admin part of Joomla installed! I haven't played with it long enough to know if the menus are translated on the front side.

I'm still playing around with both cms's so I can have a little experience playing with them. But as I learn more, I'm sure I'll concentrate on one over the other.

Watch out ... you'll get J-hooked... ;-)

Yes - Joomla is improving. I have almost no experience with Drupal, since we customise and deploy only Joomla sites for the majority of clients in the web design business of my wife and I. But we often create non-English and multi-lingual sites, and Joomla is easy to set up for them. You can set the website in one language, and the admin in another (or leave it up to each admin which they choose for themselves). And Joomla 1.6 is round the corner, which promises to fix some gaps in Joomla's list of features (more flexible user privilege control is one I'm looking forward to).

The extensions (http://extensions.joomla.org) numbering over 5000 now really make our lives easier. The new 1.5 framework makes the following possible (apparently) for developers who use Joomla as the foundation:

- Inventory control systems
- Data reporting tools
- Application bridges
- Custom product catalogs
- Integrated e-commerce systems
- Complex business directories
- Reservation systems
- Communication tools

Cool :-)

Anyway, as they say, "I don't work for xyz, I'm just a happy customer". I think both Joomla and Drupal face a bright future, as both PHP and MySQL technologies improve and are embraced by 'serious' organisations who are then prepared to support products such as these CMSes.

So ... hopefully I can be added to the list of "Joomla People" who frequent these forums. I would also love to see more Joomla users / developers here, since I believe that our faith and goals unite us no matter what (open source) software we're using! :-)

I agree. Can you think of any way we can be more inviting to Joomla! users?

There is a category for

There is a category for Religion under the Joomla Extensions. I down loaded all of them (almost ;) )the other night and a couple look very promising. The Daily Bible verse, prayer center, and one that handles bible studies stick out in my mind.

I've been playing around with Joomla for about 1 year now on my own. Once you get the hang of Joomla's admin interface, installing mods, coms, ect. you'll be whipping out web sites in no time. I use GoDaddy which by the way has a feature that will set up Joomla on your GoDaddy server in no time. I highly recommend buying this book http://www.joomlabook.com/ to get you started. I actually bought one for my 14yr old daughter to get her started. We'll see how she does. Trying to graduate her from MySpace to the big league slowly. Easy to read and written for 1.5.

If you are wanting to edit the CSS and code a little but don't want to "play" on your production server I also highly recommend the FireFox add on FireBug. It rocks in my opinion. I'll be monitoring this thread for now on and I'll be putting together a complete set of tutorials for churches that want to build Joomla based web sites. More to come.

God Bless.
