Monastic Drupal Retreat

I've made connections with a large Christian retreat center on the east coast (Washington DC area) who has a passion for bringing together the worlds of technology and spirituality. They have proposed the possibility of a retreat targeted at the idea of reconciling these two worlds in a unique way, bringing together the sacred and technological.

The monastic style retreat would focus on things like spending time in silence, eating and living in community, and other spiritual practices while the technology would be Drupal specific. It would be teaching not only Drupal skills, but how to build community online (and link it to in-person community) and put things in the perspective of our Christian lives and personal ministries.

This post is an official "feeler" post to see who might be interested in something like this. I get the impression this would be a longer term program than just a weekend, but that it would all start there.

Please give some feedback on if this interests you along with any suggestions or ideas you have which would make it more useful both spiritually and technologically. Also give some idea on how far you'd be willing to travel and how much time you'd want to spend doing something like this.

I look forward to reading your input!

Sounds interesting - it would

Sounds interesting - it would depend in part on the cost and time commitment. I work for a not-for-profit Christian university where time and money are in short supply...

I would be interested. But

I would be interested. But also the location, time and cost would be heavy factors in my ability to participate.

Ditto.

I hate to be a broken record, but it's the same for me. Time and money are both valuable, and I'm sure those two things are the most valuable resources to just about everyone.

I think in order to properly decide a quantifiable amount of time and money we'd be willing to give up for this we'll need more information. What exactly will we be doing there on a daily basis? What will we be learning? How is this unique from anything else we've done and what will we gain from sacrificing our time and money?

In the D.C. area? I'm all in!

In the D.C. area? I'm all in! I would be potentially interested in traveling further. There are a ton of camps up here in PA also.

I'd love to get together with guys to talk about the impact of technology and how to use it responsibly as well as just refresh and build a Christian brotherhood. I'd also be interested in sharing stuff. I might go so far as to say attendance would require preparing to share something (a relevant topic for discussion you've thought about lately or demo of successful/failed use of technology for spiritual purposes) with the rest of the group. My immediate thought that direction is that everyone would get more out of it because everyone not only invests time and money, but also their hearts and minds and it would open the dialog.

If this turned into something more regular and as awesome as I feel like it could be, I'd probably travel anywhere in the states for it, but I'd need to see it in action once.

One of the advantages I also see is bringing together guys from a variety of Christian backgrounds. I'm one of those kooky independent Bible guys, Rob has Lutheran background and I know that there are several other quirks of Christianity represented here. This has remained a civil place despite various differences. Having that same variety with unity could be an amazing thing for all of us.

Price wise, I guess I'd like to see it under $50/day. If we're talking cooking our own meals, I'd be thinking less price. I'd love to see what Bob could whip up and I'd be willing to spend some time on KP duty also.

Also, at the risk of sounding like a sexist prood and all that, my sense of propriety says that the style of event your talking about would lead me to say guys only or figure out a way to make it very family-oriented. Family orientation would dramatically increase complication and cost of course.

Sounds Interesting

I'd be interested in seeing the cost as well.

Established Retreat Facility

It seems that possibly I made this sound like it would be a one-off 'wing it' kinda thing...it wouldn't be. I'm not sure I can divulge the organization right now but they hold about a zillion retreats a year on a 3000 acre facility, so it would be highly organized (not by me or other geeks, but by the center) and they have massive experience putting this kind of stuff together.

I'll chat with the guys there and see if it's OK if I divulge more details and it may paint a clearer picture.

thanks for the input so far!
