Web Slices: increase usefulness of your web site

Web Slices are a new feature in Internet Explorer 8 that allow users to quickly see updates to sections of a web site (for example, seeing the latest bid of an item on ebay). There is a guide to creating web slices available and also a Firefox extension for web slices to make them work in that browser too.

I could imagine web slices could be useful for a church site. For example, information about upcoming events could be highlighted in a web slice. Given the relatively small amount of code needed to increase the usefulness of a site, I think it could be worth investigating this feature.

Useful?

I don't know if it's really useful. On the mac I've had something like this in safari for a long time and don't use it. You think it's useful for people?

re: Useful?

I'm thinking it could be a sort of "RSS lite" for those who can't quite get their head around feed readers etc. "Just click the button on the toolbar and see if there is anything new."

widget

Windows Vista can have widgets (like the mac dashboard). Would it be better to have something like that for a church?

re: widget

Maybe. I turned widgets off on my system - I didn't like the way they took up a side of the screen. Other users might like them though. I guess there is room for lots of ways to notfy users of news.
