Design trends and evangelism (and a critique request)

Hi all. New member here looking for feedback on a design and the larger context of web trends christian sites must contend in when doing outreach.

Now that I've been sufficiently vague I guess I'll explain where I'm coming from. First of all, I am finishing a Computer Science major-I'm not a graphic designer or anything of the sort. Still I have a strong philosophy on the web as an evangelism tool, so I am volunteering to update my church's website.

It's (lowly) current state:

What I'm thinking of: (sorry for including it directly)

I am interested in any suggestions of font, color, layout, etc. But of real interest is the emotion it conveys and the message it sends. What is your first impression? What would you expect of the people it represents? I realize a full site says more than a picture, but there is a lot of emotion in design.

Now contrast that with sites like these:

What are you're thoughts? Is the design I am proposing 'too bland' to grab and hold the attention of a media-centric culture or are the designs showcased somewhat over-the-top in trying to be appealing and interesting? Again, how effective is the message and what is the emotion?

My church is somewhat conservative in beliefs and practices. Much of the A/V found elsewhere hasn't entered the picture and I am OK with that. I guess the trouble I see is that I am trying to present an honest picture of who we are-to not create a false impression. That means not alienating that traditional base while creating some appeal to those outside our church and outside of Christianity. On top of that my opinion is somewhat biased as I am visually impaired. heavy images and flash create confusion for me and a screen reader and, consequently, I tend to avoid them in my own work. (There's also dial-up issues. I use that, too.) How can these be used effectively? There is a lot here, so I'll stop and let someone straighten me out :)

High quality image

The overall layout looks good, simple (in a good way), etc.

Do you have a higher quality image of the new design. I'm interested in how the fonts look and the image you linked to doesn't look so good but, I think it's just the image.
