This is a painful issue. Not because it's been around a long time. The developer of that module received money via a Chipin during the middle of last summer but never produced the feature. In talking to him this winter it doesn't seem that this feature will be rolling out anytime soon. There are a number of other things in front of it.
Due to how the audio module works, this feature requires a bit of rework of the module. And, you loose a bit of the power of the audio module under the remote hosting, like the ability to modify the id3 tags. The audio files need to be on the same file system as drupal for it to modify the id3 tags of the file.
Now, this can be done using a bit of custom code and some other modules. Just, not with the audio module.
This is one of the most annoying issues sitting out there in drupal land. I am not sure what else to do at this point. Especially since someone was already paid to do the job.
You may want to hit up drewish and see if there is any update on this.

I know mfer is in on the action to get this going. I host audio on libsyn and would love to just put in a url for an mp3 and have the audio module create the feed and do eerything else it does minus upload a file locally.
